Savasana is the Sanskrit word for corpse and it is a pose in the type of yoga I practice. We spend the second half of our ninety minute class in and out of the restful posture. We lie still, either on our backs or bellies; arms laying gently by our sides, heels or toes together, feet falling out. We are reminded to let every part of our bodies, from organs, to tissues, to even the mouth, relax. After a few seconds of stillness we do a difficult, full body sit up and move into tricky postures like ustrasana, the camel. In this pose we stand on our knees with hips tight and pushed forward as we let our heads fall backwards setting our eye gaze for the back wall first and our toes next. We unfold our spines as deeply backwards as our breath will allow.
One of my teachers recently suggested we approach the second half of class as though we were in one, long savasana with postures in between rather than several rounds of intense movement and relaxation. I like that thinking. It helped me ease deeper into some of the most difficult postures.
This is how it is for us as beings. We have one, long savasana, or Light Experience, with many postures, or lifetimes, in between. Rather than get too caught up on any one lifetime even though some, maybe even this one, surely have been difficult, think of yourself as a Light Being having an embodied life. Breath into it. Do your best. Maybe congratulate and validate yourself for the work you're engaged in. But mostly, relax. Easy does it. And do what every yoga teacher I've ever had reminds me of constantly: don't forget to smile. Live this life, be in this posture, with your happy, smiling, face.
There comes a time to stop everything and simply be. Let now be that time. We are being called to change and the shift we are called to starts with our own healing. In fact, the last time change occurred at this level was in the mid 90's. Take advantage of the planet's support. Take the time to slow down. Take the time to listen. Take the time to be 100% you.
Today, I allow my heart to speak. I stop the chatter of the business of my life and sit with my own heart. I know that my soul lives there, in the center of me, and I am willing to simply be. I affirm my life in the depth of my own heart and breath. Sometimes I cry for no understandable reason but it is in the lifting out of old energies through the body's tears that I am fresh. My tears are the rain that brings the gentle petals of my life's flowering. Today I allow myself to be.
